Chapter 16

Chase

Shit. What have I done?

I stared at the ceiling fan, my eyes following the dark wooden blades as they went round and round above me. My heart was still pounding in my chest, though as I took long deep breaths, it began to slow. Sam was right beside me, completely silent. I didn’t even know what to say to her—my head was spinning. The whole thing had happened so fast, and it had been so much better than I had ever imagined.

It was mind-blowing.

I glanced over to Sam, who was staring at the same ceiling fan that I was. “That was—”

“A mistake,” she cut me off, immediately sitting up. “I have no idea what came over me—I’m so sorry.”

Wait, what?

I sat up, my gaze trailing after her as she dressed in lightning speed. “You don’t have to apologize,” I commented as she smoothed out her hair. “I instigated it.”

“But I shouldn’t have given in to it,” she snapped, shaking her head. “We don’t get along, Chase—and now we just complicated everything.”

Oh, right.

I nodded, suddenly remembering just how much the woman irritated me—though I felt as though I had cured most of that in the last half hour. “We don’t have to complicate it.”

She popped out a hip and narrowed her eyes at me, appearing to be borderline offended. “What exactly does that mean, Chase? I don’t do casual arrangements.”

Me, either.

“Okay,” I answered, feeling myself closing off as she appeared to be getting more and more flustered. “We just won’t—”

“Do this again,” she finished for me, letting out a heavy sigh. “I get that you’re the kind of guy who can get whomever he wants—and I’m sure you’ve been with a lot of women, so let’s just call this what it is. We both had a little bit too much to drink, and it just happened.”

Man, she really had me pegged…wrong. But I wasn’t about to ruin her narrative—it wasn’t worth it. Besides, she was making her thoughts of me very clear.

“If that’s what you want to do—we just won’t discuss this ever again. It’ll be like it never even happened,” I said with a nod. I grabbed my things, hurriedly getting dressed. I slid into a t-shirt and sweats, ignoring the fact that she was still just standing there, watching me. “Are you waiting for me to say something?” I snapped over at her, cringing at the sharpness in my tone. “You made yourself clear, Sam. I’m just agreeing with you. I don’t have time for the complication anyway. You’re an employee.”

“I don’t need you to say anything. I just have no idea where I’m supposed to sleep tonight,” she answered me, her own voice growing strained. “But I can just crash on the couch.”

I instantly felt a pang of remorse for being so snappy with her. “You can sleep in here—I’ll sleep on the couch tonight, so I don’t wake up Ella.”

“Are you sure you don’t want to stay in here? You paid for it,” Sam countered, folding her arms across her chest.
